Control of Vibrio harveyi infection in rearing of Penaeus monodon larvae biologically using phytoplankton
1997
Taupik, I. (Loka Penelitian Perikanan Pantai Gondol-Bali (Indonesia))
The experiment was conducted to know the effectiveness of phytoplankton in inhibiting the growth of Vibrio harveyi in rearing of Penaeus monodon larvae. Three kinds of phytoplankton, namely Chaetoceros sp., Tetraselmis sp. and Thalassiosira sp. from pure culture were tested. Chaetoceros sp. was found to be the most effective in reducing bacterial number in rearing water and gave the highest survival rate to P. monodon larvae (58.67 percent), and significantly different in statistic calculation (P0.05) than Tetraselmis sp. and Thalassiosira sp. The survival rate of infected larvae treated with 4 times of standard density of Chaetoceros sp. was similar to that of uninfected larvae
