Status of mahseer fisheries in north and north-eastern india with a note on their conservation

Mahseer, the beautiful game fish inhabitant of upland coldwater hillstreams was in a plenty till a few decades ago. But the anthropogenic activities, on account of rapid industrial development, particularly in the hills, has considerably destroyed their habitat resulting in substantial decrease in their population. The damage to their population is so extensive that these fishes have now been kept under the category of "endangered species". This warrants immediate attention of ecologists, administrators and mangers of chalk out remedial measures for revival of the fisheries of this premier game fish. Present status, the resources distribution, conservational and developmental measures for revival of their fisheries in North and North-Eastern India are discussed in this communication. If, the suggested measure are translated into practice, the day is not far away when this fish will once again rule the wild streams.
