Influence of physoilogical age of seed potatoes on crop growth and yield

The effect of physiological age of seed potatoes on growth and yield was studied with cvs. Kufri Chandramukhi and Kufri Joyti. Physiologically young seeds grown at Kufri (North Indian hills) and physiologically old seeds grown at Modipuram (North India plains) and stored at 2-4øC for seven months, were planted at Modipuram during the winter of 1992 and 1993. Physiologically old seeds emerged quickly, initiated tubers early, developed less foliage that senesced early and the crop matured in 90 days. Physiologically young seed showed delayed emergence, tuber initiation and senescence and the crop matured in 120 days. Young seeds produced plants that had fewer but taller stems, higher photosynthetic efficiency and rapid growth rate leading to greater shoot dry weight. Old seeds produced higher tuber yield at early harvest and lower yield at final harvest. The highter tuber yield at final harvest in young seed was mainly due to the larger leaf area index maintained for longer duration. Physiologically old seeds produced more number of stems therefore more tubers per unit area but the average tuber size was less.
