Some biochemical changes in sucsceptible pigeonpea seedlings in response to inoculation with non-pathogenic Fusaria and its significance in induction of resistance against Fusarium Wilt

Inoculation of seedlings of a susceptible cv of pigeonpea with some soilborne Fusaria, non-pathogenic to pigeonpea, but pathogenic to some other hosts, resulted in some quantitive biochemical changes within the seedlings as compared to those inoculated with the wilt pathogen, Fusarium udam. In non-pathogen inoculated seedlings the polygalacturonase activity was much lower, while peroxidase activity was significantly higher than those inoculated with F. udum. Total protein content was also significantly higher in non-pathogen inoculated as well as uninoculated seedlings (both susceptible and resistant). The phenol content of non-pathogen inoculated seedlings of both resistant and suceptible cvs was significantly higher than F. udum inoculated ones upto 4th day of estimation. On the 7th day only the non-pathogen inoculated seedlings of the susceptible cv showed significantly higher phenol content. Significance of these biochemical changes in the non-pathogen inoculated suceptible host in the context of induction of resistance in pigeonpea against F. udum is discussed.
