Reproductive quality of male prawn affects the hatchery production. Captive rearing is reported to have its negative effect on the reproductive quality of male prawns. In this study 10 wild and healthy P. monodon were collected from Bay of Bengal. They were reared in captivity in a backyard hatchery. Spermatophores were collected on days 0,10,20,30 and 40 from 2 prawns each time. Weight of spermatophores was recorded and the total number of sperms per spermatophore was estimated using haemocytometer. Percentage of live and abnormal sperms was estimated by a newly developed (for the prawn sperms) Eosin-Nigrosin staining technique. There was no significant difference (P0.05) in any of the parameter studied between any two days of observation. This study indicates that reproductive quality of male P.monodon may not be affected by captive rearing.
