The Effect of Water Stress at Various Growth Stages of Durum Wheat (Triticum turgidum L) Genotypes Derived from crosses Utilizing Land Race Variety on yield Related Characters

A pot experiment was conducted under glasshouse to study the effect of water stress during tillering, stem extension, heading. Ripening, and through entire growth period on yield-related traits, using four durum wheat genotypes derived from crosses of Hourani with stork in addition to the parents. There was significant interaction for genotype by treatment for kernel weight per spike, spike length, number of spilelets per spike, awn length and flag leaf area. On the other hand, there was no significant interaction for 100- kernel weight, number of kernels per spike and number of tillers per plant. Water stress treatments tended to reduce the yield related characters of wheat genotypes, and the reduction was more pronounced under water stress during entire growth period. The high yielding genotypes were found to maintain higher levels of yield components, mainly number and weight of kernels per spike, indicating their importance in yield improvement in durum wheat.
