Evaluation of some Kenya tea (Camellia Sinensis) clones for resistance/susceptibility to Pestalotiopsis Theae (Sawada) as inluenced by some chemical attributes of mature green leaf

Evaluation of different high yielding kenyan tea clones for reaction to infection by Pestalotiopsis theae was done in laboratory experiments. Tea clones responded differently to leaf infections by P. theae. Clones 31/11 and 303/119 developed lesions significantly (P=0.05) smaller diameter of 1.8 and 2.2 mm respectively than clone 303/999 and 303/577 which had the largest lesions ( 6.0 and 9.0 mm diameter, respectively). Investigations of factors responsible for resistance/ susceptibility of tea clones to infection by P. theae showed that total polyphenol content of mature leaves inflenced infection. Total polyphenol content of leaves of different clones and the size of lesions developed following infection by P. theae showed significant inverse relationship. The water soluble carbohydrates content and the pH of cell sap of mature leaves of clonal tea did not influence leaf infection by the pathogen. The pH of medium significantly influenced vegetative groth of P. theae in vitro in a quadratic manner with an optimum groth occuring at pH 5.0.
