Three main questions are posed in the article: 1. Whether the GDP growth in the European Union (EU) countries since 1960 was faster than in other countries? 2. Whether the GDP increase within EU is more stable than outside the Union? 3. Has EU succeeded in bringing together per capita GDP levels of its member states? The most general conclusion for Latvia is that EU membership does not guarantee immediate prosperity.
