Growth characteristics and response to illumination of some Shorea species in the logged-over Mixed Dipterocarp Forest of Sarawak, Malaysia. The diameter growth of the Shorea species groups, selangan batu, yello meranti, and white meranti and of 17 red meranti species in the Mixed Dipterocarp Forest of Sarawak is analysed and described. Two approaches are chosen. In the first approach, research plots with similar growth levels are pooled to yield seven grouped plots (Gplot) in which the growth behaviour of the shoreas is studied. In the second approach, a grouping is performed based on the crown illuminatuion. In both cases, homogeneity is assured before pooling by means of non-parameteric tests. Both approaches lead to similar results. Finally, the growth characteristics of the species are presented by an average value and an additional factor describing the effects of a change in crown illumination.
