Comparative analysis of the hybrids and their parents indicated that all the crosses with species Dendrobium canaliculatum showed improvement of the hybrids in plant height, number of leaves, leaf size, stem circle, number of tillering, inflorescence length, flower color and flower size, which suggests that D. canaliculatum has a good general combining ability. Most of the characteristics of D. malihini x D. canaliculatum F1 hybrids were better than the parents, indicating positive heterotic effects, except in the number of tillers and number of inflorescence per stem. There were seven characteristics in which differences were noted between crosses of D. liho-liho x D. canaliculatum, D. betty gotto x D. taurinum and 11 characteristics between D. sue ching x D. canaliculatum cross. All characteristics of the F1 hybrid between D. malihini x D. stratlotes, D. keiko nakagawa x D. affine, D. betty gotto x D. gauldii blue x D. malihini x D. atakit have no significant differences, indicating that the parent combinations have no specific combining ability. Parent combinations between D. alice ogatta x D. nindii yielded good F1 hybrids as indicated by their better characteristics than their parents
