A total of 27 QTLs [quantitative trait loci] for heading date were detected on all chromosomes of rice except for chromosomes 5 and 8, from the results of the 29 tests at the nine sites in tropical and temperate areas carried out during 1995 to 2000. These analyses was carried out using 190 recombinant inbred (RI) lines derived from the cross between an Indica type line Milyang 23 and a Japonica type variety, Akihikari. Among them, 20 and seven QTLs indicated late heading with Milyang 23 and Akihikari homozygous genotype, respectively. In temperate regions, five QTLs on chromosome 3(two) and one each in chromosomes 7, 9, and 11 among them indicated strong functions. Two QTLs on chromosome 7 and 11 showed strong influence and a reciprocal relationship depending on the test site and year. The QTL on chromosome was detected in wet season (from Jan to Apr) at a tropical site (IRRI) [Philippines]. On the other hand the QTL on chromosome 11 did not show any contribution. Although a total of eight QTLs were detected through the two investigations at IRRI, the reaction pattern of QTLs in dry season was completely different from the results of wet season at IRRI and those at temperate sites, about the chromosome location and degree of influence
