Current achievements on hybrid corn breeding in Myanmar

Among the cereals in Myanmar, corn (Zea mays L.) is the second most important crop after rice. Widely grown are open-pollinated varieties (OPVs). However, hybrid corn has increasingly been adapted into commercial production in the world. To increase productivity and total production of corn in Myanmar, it is imperative to develop hybrid corn and to gradually replace the OPVs with the hybrids. A long-term hybrid corn research and development program was initiated at CARI [Central Agriculture Research Inst.] Yesin in 1974-75. The hybrid corn program successfully released Yesin Hybrid-1, and Yesin Hybrid-2, Yesin Hybrid-3 in 1993-94 and Yezin-Hybrid 4 in 1995-97. Yezin Hybrid 1, 2 and 4 are varieties with medium early maturity, high yield and excellent adaptation to lowland tropics. Yezin Hybrid-3 is a variety with medium maturity suited for highland subtropics. These hybrids have a yielding advantage of 36.40% over existing OPVs. Salient characteristics of Yezin Hybrids include uniform germination and vigor, tolerance to important diseases and pests, uniformity of big ears and so on. Until 1995-96, hybrid corn seed production was mainly done at research and extension farms. In addition to them, it has been jointly carried out on the farmer's field since 1996-97
