Twenty one indica and 21 japonica rice varieties at similar growth stages were selected as research materials. The coefficients of variation of photosynthetic rates (Pn) and photosynthesis function duration (RSP) of individuals within a rice variety were 3.011% and 3.59%, respectively and 11.1% and 11.2% among varieties, respectively. The differences of Pn and RSP among rice varieties were significant at 1% level while that between indica and japonica rice were not significant. The number of indica rice varieties with high Pn was more than that of japonica varieties and the number of japonica rice varieties with long RSP was relatively more than that of indica varieties. According to the clustering analysis of 42 rice varieties could be separated into three groups, i.e. high, middle, or low based on Pn and RSP. Two-dimension compositor was made in rice varieties for Pn and RSP and divided into 4 quadrants. The distribution frequency of indica and japonica rice varieties was the highest in the second and first quadrants, respectively. Some rice varieties regarded as special photosynthesis resources were selected such as Xieyou 9308, Lunhui 422, Wuyuejing 8, NPT, Shanyou 129. They might be used in rice improvement programs and in studies of inheritance of photosynthesis
