Effects of Azotobacter inoculation of rice and nutrient status of post harvest soil

Effects of Azotobacter inoculation of rice seedlings either individually or along with the application of different levels of organic and chemical fertilizers on the growth and yield of transplant aman and Boro rice and nutrient status of post-harvest soils were evaluated through two field trials. The study was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University. Increased growth in terms of leaf area index (AI), plant height and tiller number/plant as recorded from Azotobacter inoculated plots both individually and in combination with the use of organic and chemical fertilizers. Considering both grain and straw yields, Azotobacter inoculation exhibited significant influence along with all levels of organic and chemical fertilizers. But overall best performance regarding growth and yield was observed from Azotobacter inoculation along with the use of three-fourths of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizers. Analysis of post-harvest soil showed that Azotobacter inoculation along with the use of three-fourths of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizers appeared to be the best way in maintaining total N, organic matter and available P in soil which could be recommended for farmer's practice in Bangladesh
