Comparative histopathology and histochemistry of the reproductive organs of maturing Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis niloticus exposed to Azinphosethyl

The effect of Azinphosethyl (tradename: Gusathion A) on the reproductive organs of two freshwater fish species, Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis niloticus were investigated. Two-month old fish were acclimatized for one week prior to the 96-hr LC 50 determination and one month exposure to 0.005 mg/L and 0.01 mg/L Azinphosethyl. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis were more synchronized in the control of O. niloticus than in C. carpio. In the treated fish, maturation of the gonad was inhibited, the number of gametogenic cells was reduced due to atresia, and ducts were damaged. Histopathological changes, however, appeared more drastic in C. carpio. Ovotestis, vestigial left tests and highly asynchronous left and right gonadal development were observed in C. carpio but not in O. niloticus. The fine structure of damaged cells, however, appeared similar in both species. Azinphosethyl inhibited 3-beta-hydroxy-5 steroid dehydrogenase. The activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase were slightly elevated in both species after one month exposure
