Effects of varying blood composition on the productive and reproductive performance of dairy cows

The productive and reproductive performance of Holstein Friesian (HF) and its fractional crosses to Red Sindhi (RS) and Sahiwal maintained at DTRI-UPLB [Dairy Training and Research Inst.-University of the Philippines Los Banos, College, Laguna, Philippines] Diary Farm, were analyzed. The animals were grouped into eight blood compositions: A (50% HF x 50% Sahiwal), imported: B (50% HF x 50% RS); C (62.5-75% HF x 37.5-25% RS); D (80-87.5% HF x 20.0-12.5% RS); E (90.0-93.8% x 10.0-6.2% RS); F (95.0-96.9% HF x 5.0-3.1 RS); G (100% HF, imported); and H (100% HF, locally born). Significantly longest lactation period and highest milk production was obtained from the animals in group C at 2353 kg in 302 days. Lowest production were obtained from HF-Sahiwal crosses at 1186 kg in 152 days. Calving interval was shortest in group B at 399 days and longest in group H at 510 days. Means of days open ranged from 128-208 days, longest, observed from group B and lowest in group H. The number of services per conception was lowest in group A (1.67) and highest in group F (3.16). Ages at first calving ranged from 33 to 46 months with group 2 as youngest first calvers and group G as oldest. Considering both the productive and reproductive parameters, the study revealed that among the blood groups studied the cows with 75% HF blood performed the best
