Collection and preservation of semen from imported dairy bulls

Semen for artificial breeding was successfully collected from six untrained bulls with the use of an artificial vagina by letting them mount cows in oestrus in a breeding chute. Semen collected ranged from 3 cc to 10 cc in volume, with an average of 5.7 cc per ejaculation. The concentration of sperm per cu mm ranged from 740,000 to 3,740,000 with an average of 1,917,333.3. The pH of semen ranged from 6.2 to 6.8 with an average of 6.5. Initial motility ranged from 50 percent to 80 percent with an average of 68.9 percent; or a grade rating ranging from 2 to 4 with an average of 3.5. It took 2 to 14 days, or an average of 5.8 days, to reduce the initial motility of the semen to a grade of 1 (20%)
