Antibacterial activity of ylang-ylang essential oil

The bioactivity of an essential oil, hydro-distilled from ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) flowers, was determined using the disk diffusion method for screening, and the agar dilution method for MIC determination. Both ATCC strains: Staphylococcus aureus (25923). Escherichia coli (25922), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (27853), and clinical pathogens from urine, wound, and sputum: S. aureus, Citrobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp. were found to be susceptible to the essential oil at varying degrees. Known standard constituents of ylang-ylang oil: alpha-pinene, eugenol, geraniol and linalol were also found to be active against either or both gram positive and gram negative organisms. There have been reports on folkloric practices using ylang-ylang in skin health, malaria, typhus, intestinal, urinary and pulmonary infectious. This study explores the use of ylang-ylang oil against pathogens and seeks to find basis for some of these practices. Because of the demand for the perfume industry, the use of ylang-ylang oil for therapy has been ignored. However, due to the mergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, now is the time to have a second look at this essential oil
