Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome in laying hens given diets varying in carbohydrate sources and levels of protein and energy

Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) is a metabolic disorder in chickens. It is characterized by a high fat content and the occurrence of bleeding or hemorrhages in the liver that causes sickness and death in laying hens. Its cause is still unknown, hence, this study. Thirteen dietary treatments were used to compare the effects of different carbohydrate sources (corn, sorghum, and wheat), and levels of protein and energy on performance, liver composition, and incidence of FLHS in white leghorn layer hens. FLHS was most prevalent in laying hens fed corn and sorghum diets. Their livers were significantly larger than the livers of hens fed wheat diets. More cases of FLHS were observed in hens that were given a lower protein level than those fed the higher level. Laying hens that consumed diets with relatively high energy and low protein appeared more prone to FLHS than hens given less energy and higher proteins in their feeds
