The study assessed the status of tomato industry in the country through review of secondary data on hectarage, production, imports, exports and prices. Area planted to tomato had been declining for the past 10 years. With about 20,000 ha. planted in 1990, tomato hectarage was reduced to about 15,000 ha in 1998. This resulted to a decline in production of tomato by as much as 50,000mt, from 190,000t in 1990 to 140,000t in 1998. The average yield, however, gradually increased with about 9.5t/ha in 1998. Pangasinan was the leading tomato producing province with 16% of its total area planted to tomato in 1998, followed by Bukidnon (12%) and Ilocos Norte (10%). The other major tomato-producing provinces were Iloilo (8%), Nueva Viscaya (6%), Nueva Ecija (6%), Laguna (4%), and Cebu (4%). The Philippines imported processed and salad tomatoes in fresh and chilled form to augment local supply. In 1997, imports came mainly from Australia with 43t valued at $26,320. In 1998, tomato imports declined with the bulk mainly from Singapore and Hongkong. The country also exported tomato in fresh and processed forms in limited quantities. Among the problems cited in exporting tomato were quality standard, competitive world market prices and availability of tomato. Prices of tomato in Luzon markets was generally lower during the summer months of February to March and these reached its highest retail price of Php 82.32 compared to the average monthly retail price throughout Luzon markets during the month of January at Php 31.29/kg. Price trends in Visayas and Mindanao was different. Monthly retail price of tomato in Cebu, Davao City, Bukidnon, and Misamis Oriental fluctuated, with lower prices during the months of March to April and August to September. Price band was only Php 15/kg compared to about Php 35/kg in Luzon
