Physico-chemical changes in the bushbean (Vigna sinensis x sesquipedalis) seed during development

Growth and size and weight of the bushbean seed followed linear and seigmoidal growth patterns, respectively. The seed changed from a soft, transluscent and glossy texture to a dirty-white, opaque, firm and hard appearance, and became increasingly rounded and full. Sugar and starch contents increased with maturity but declined back to low levels in much older seeds. Protein content decreased with seed age. Seed quality in terms of germination capacity, coefficient rate of germination and percentage of normal seedlings were comparable in 14 to 18 day-old seeds. For use as planting material, bushbean seeds are best harvested as early as 15 days from anthesis without affecting yield and quality.
