Fruit variability and correlation of various characters: 1. avocado, atis and rambutan

The fruit characters of 96 avocado, 77 atis and 51 rambutan tree selections grown from seeds were evaluated and analyzed. In avocado, wide variation were observed for fruit weight, fruit length, peel weight, seed weight and edible portion, while narrower variation were observed for fruit width and total soluble solids. Correlation analysis shows that fruit weight is correlated with fruit width (0.77), while fruit length is positively and highly correlated with flesh thickness (r=0.83) at the bottom of the fruit. In atis, considerable variations were found for fruit weight, fruit length, seed weight, peel weight and percent edible portion, while narrower variation existed for fruit width, flesh thickness, seed length, seed width and peel thickness. Fruit weight is positively and highly correlated with fruit width (r=0.95) and flesh thickness (r=0.86). In addition, fruit width is correlated with flesh thickness (0.82). In rambutan, large variation were detected for fruit weight, seed weight, and edible portion, only while narrower variation existed for several characters including fruit length, fruit width, flesh thickness and total soluble solids. Fruit weight is positively and highly correlated with fruit length (r=0.81), width (r=0.80) and seed weight (r=0.88), while fruit length is correlated with fruit width (0.75) and seed weight (r=0.89). The implications of these results in mass selection breeding and strategies for on-site evaluation of elite genotypes among seedling-derived population trees are discussed
