Properties and constraints of red-yellow and volcanic ash soils planted to rootcrops in the Philippines

Rootcrops are generally grown in highly weathered Red-Yellow and Volcanic Ash soils in the Philippines which are known to be infertile and have low potential for crop production. This research was conducted to provide baseline information on the properties and constraints of Red-Yellow and Volcanic Ash soils planted to root crops through determination of the soils morphological, physical, and chemical properties. Some of the identified soil constraints associated with Red-Yellow and Volcanic Ash soils planted to root crops include: low organic matter, soil acidity, low nutrient reserves, low amounts of exchangeable bases such as Ca, K, Mg, and Na, low P availability, high clay content and highly compacted soils. The results of this research showed strong evidence on the existence of morphological, physical and chemical constraints in Red-Yellow and Volcanic Ash soils that are planted to rootcrops in large areas in the Philippines
