Utilization of whey in the production of methane

The soft cheese whey was treated as follows: (a) No effluent inoculum added; (b) a 10% effluent inoculum was added, and (c) a 20% effluent inoculum was added. A control treatment of 33% swine manure slop plus a 10% effluent inoculum was included in this study. The effluent inoculum was obtained from the swine manure methane generator. One set of these treatments was incubated at ambient room temperature and another set of 55 deg C water bath. At ambient room temperature incubation, whey started to show gas production within one to three days with the peak gas yield appearing in the fourth day. The swine manure slop showed gas production in the second day with the peak gas yield in the fourth to fifth day. The whey produced as much gas as the swine manure slop. At 55 deg C incubation, both the whey and the swine manure slop produced gas in the first day. The peak gas yield for the whey was still the fourth day while for the swine manure slop it was the seventh day. The swine manure slop produced more gas than the whey. The whey gas was not combustible while the swine manure slop gas was. The effluent inoculum obtained from the swine manure methane generator did not affect the production of methane in whey
