An experiment was conducted to seethe response of various mulches i. e. and, saw-dust and sand + saw-dust and soil amendments i.e. soil, sand and farm yard manure in the ratio of 1:1:1, 1:1/2:1, 1:1/2:1/2 and 1/2:1:1/2 along with soil alone as check. Their effects were studied on germination, growth and yield of ginger rhizomes. This experiment was conducted under green net shade at National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad during 1993. Highest germination percentage (98%) was recorded in the beds mulched with saw-dust followed by sand + saw-dust or soil + sand + farm yard manure in the ratio of 1:1:1. The highest number of sprouts per rhizome were recorded in the beds mulched with saw-dust. Saw-dust mulching alone resulted in greater plant height. Fresh rhizome yield was highest (7.4 t/ha) in saw- dust treatment followed by soil amendment (1:1:1) giving 6.7 t/ha yield.
