Influence of the age of cutting and potassium level on the yield of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas)

This study was conducted : a.) to evaluate the agronomic characteristics of sweet potato under Musuan [Bukidnon, Philippines] conditions as affected by different levels of potassium and age of cutting; b.) to find out the effect of potassium on growth and yield of sweet potato; and c.) to identify the treatment that will give the highest income. A Randomized Complete Block Design in factorial arrangement with 3 replications was used. The age of cutting was assigned as Factor A and levels of potassium as Factor B. Results showed that apical cuttings significantly produced the highest root yield followed by the middle and basal cuttings. Apical cuttings exhibited the highest mean in all agronomic characters except in leaf area index and dry matter weight. The lowest yield was obtained from basal cuttings without potassium application. More marketable tubers were produced from apical cuttings applied with 270kg/ha of potassium. Dry matter weight of vines was affected by the levels of potassium and age of cuttings. Results showed that treatment without potassium application had the highest dry matter weight. It was found that older planting materials had significantly lower root yield than the apical cuttings. Highest net income in sweet potato was observed from planting apical cuttings applied with 90kg/ha of potassium fertilizer while the lowest was obtained from older cuttings with 270kg/ha of potassium application
