Response of different pea cultivars to various planting dates under the agro-climatic conditions of Swat [Pakistan]

Effect of different planting dates on the growth and yield of different pea cultivars were studied at Agriculture Research Station (North), Mingora, Swat. Four pea cultivars viz. Vip., Navona, Rando and Climax were sown on four different dates with 15 days interval, viz. September 15, September 30, October 15 and October 30. For the selection of high yielding pea cultivars and suitable time of sowing, analysis of data showed that planting dates had significant effects on all the parameters except number of pods/plant and number of grains/pod. Among the planting dates, September 15 showed maximum plant height (113.8 cm), October 15 had maximum population %age (98.89) and fresh yield (6950.30 kg/ha), while October 30 showed maximum days to flowering (106.9) and days to 50% edible maturity (153.6). The results also showed that cultivars had significant effects on all the parameters except number of seeds germinated and fresh yield. Among cultivars, Climax showed maximum days, flowering (95.50) and maximum days to 50% edible maturity (151.3), cultivar Vip had maximum plant height at first picking (111.5 cm) and maximum fresh pod yield (6246 kg/ha) while maximum number of pods/plant (45.08) and maximum number of grains/pod (6.17) were noted in cultivar Rando. In interaction, cultivar Climax showed, maximum days to flowering (122.33) were noted when seeds were sown on October 30. Cultivar Vip had maximum average plant height at first picking (125.00) when sown on September 30 while cultivar Rando showed maximum number of pods/plant (62.33) when sown on September 15.
