Some studies on seedborne species of Alternaria isolated from sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Two seedborne species of Alternaria i.e. A. sesami and A. sesamicola were isolated from infected seeds of sesame varieties PR-125, S-17, PR-19-9, and PR- 14-2. The frequency was highest from PR-125 (62.5%) followed by S-17 (45.0%). A. sesami was isolated as most predominant species according to its infection percentage. The dark brown lesions developed on 1-month old plants inoculated with A. Sesami. The typical dark brown colony growth with concentric rings occurred on V-8 juice agar. The maximum size and number of conidia were also obtained in V-8 juice agar followed by PDA, oatmeal agar and water agar leaf medium (WALM).
