Herd health and an efficiency of cattle reproduction - a need and an approach to analysis

This study analyses the effect of the length of a calving interval and diseases to the cow production efficiency at some farms (six farms) in the Koçice district (eastern part of the Slovak Republic) during 1997 and 1998 year. The results of the study reveal a decrease in average milk production per day with the longer calving interval (farms no. 2, 3 and 6 compared to farms no. 1, 4 and 5). The effect of diseases on milk production efficiency was found out at the farm no. 4 and 6. The analysis of milk production efficiency should include the whole calving interval rather than simply the lactation interval, since the production costs per cow are also calculated for the whole calving interval. This is clear from the results of the farm no. 3 and 4. The calving interval is longer at the farm no. 3 (488 days) than at the farm no. 4 (433 days) and the costs effectiveness is worsened at the farm no. 3 by 12.80 Sk per day for calving interval than for lactation interval, if compared to the farm no. 4. Based on the results of the study, therefore one needs to realise that in order to determine the farm production efficiency it is also important to analyse the effect of animal (herd) health to the costs of production. Moreover, to analyse the effect there is a need a functional model for better understanding the effect of animal health to the efficiency of farm production.
