Determination of suitable shape and plot size for estimation of off-forest tree resources in Machame, Moshi-Tanzania

A study was carried out to determine suitable shape and plot size for estimation of off-forest tree resources in Machame, Moshi-Tanzania. Variables used were number of stems per hectare (N/ha), basal area per hectare (G/ha) and volume per hectare (V/ha). A total of 29 sample plots were established for data collection using the stratified random sampling method. For every sample plot 4 plots, 2 square and 2 rectangular, of different sizes were demarcated. The results showed significantly (P0.01) the suitable plot size and shape to be a rectangle measuring 20 m wide and 250 m long. Both size and shape affected the coefficient of variation and error percent of a plot. Rectangular plots were generally more precise than square plots
