Effect of paraquat and ethephon to accelerate harvest and drying method on seed quality of soybean grown in early rainy season

Results from the preliminary study showed that early harvest at R8 gave a better seed quality than at harvesting maturity (HM) with higher seed germination and vigour measured after 6 months of storage. Bin drying at 39 deg C showed a better result than sun drying. About the effectiveness of defoliants on accelerated harvesting and seed quality, the results showed that paraquat and ethephon application did not affect soybean seed quality. The paraquat applications at 100, 150 and 200 g ai./rai and ethephon application at 50, 100 and 150 g ai./rai did not affect seed germination and vigour. The study of seed production under farmer's field conditions by comparing 2 defoliants at minimum rates and 3 drying methods i.e. bin drying at 39 deg C, drying by blower at room temperature and sun drying with 2 soybean varieties (Chiang Mai 60 and S.J.5). The results showed that paraquat application caused the highest rate of defoliation and seed moisture content was lower than that by ethephon application and control. There were no differences between 3 drying methods in terms of seed germination, but there was a tendency that drying by blower at room temperature gave the highest seed vigour than the other 2 methods. It was possible to produce S.J.5 soybean seed in early rainy season under farmer's field conditions and the seed could be stored for growing in dry season. However, it was not appropriate to produce Chiang Mai 60 soybean seed in early rainy season.
