Study of antifungal activity of anthraquinones from Cassia alata Linn. leaves

Cassia alata Linn. which is a member of the family Fabaceae has been used for laxative properties and for the treatment of ringworm for a long time. The leaves were extracted and anthraquinones aloe-emodin, rhein and chrysophanol were identified as main constituents. Ethanol extract, aloe-emodin, rhein and chrysophanol showed antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Epidemophyton floccosum, Microsporum gypseum and M. canis by disc diffusion method. By broth dilution method, it was found that rhein gave the best inhibition against E. floccosum, T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes with MIC 156 micro g/ml while ethanol extract showed MIC of 1,250, 625 and 2,500 micro g/ml against E. floccosum, T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes, respectively. Anthraquinones and ethanol extract had no in vitro activity against Aspergillus sp. and Candida albicans.
