This study aims at to evaluate the state of soil and water environment in a traditional rural handicraft production village. Survey found that quantity of fertilizer using in this village is still in reasonable amount as comparison with that in intensive cultivation area of Red River delta and the possibility of pollution from fertilizer use are therefore not very high. Heavy metal contents of one or several elements such as Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb were detected higher than critical levels in many soils and sludge samples, especially the Cd content. Three among 17 sludge samples were detected contaminated of four elements (Cu, Cd, Zn, Pb). The results showed that in these area surface water have been polluted and eutrophicated (low DO, high phosphorous content) and some deep - water samples (in wells) had very high content of Mn and Fe. Soils and water of this village have been polluting by wastes from different complex sources. It is time to warn the policy makers to work together with scientists and farmers for solving together this problem in protecting both the traditional production and the environment.
