Effectiveness of Azotobacter chroococcum and Bacillus megatherium in corn

The soil is inhabited by a variety of nitrogen fixing and phosphorus mineralizing bacteria which supply plants with nitrogen and phosphorus. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Azotobacter chroococcum, a nitrogen-fixing bacterium, and Bacillus megatherium, a phosphorus-mineralizing bacterium, in corn. Effectiveness of individual strains of these bacteria and their combinations was studied in two corn hybrids grown on a humogley soil. Corn seeds have been inoculated with the bacterial suspensions prior to seeding. At the end of corn growing season, crop yield and microbiological activity of the soil were measured. The obtained results showed that the bacterial species, applied individually or in mixture, increased the yield performance of both hybrids. They also increased the total number of microorganisms, the numbers of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, actinomycetes, azotobacters and free nitrogen-fixing bacteria and dehydrogenase activity while decreasing the number of fungi. Use of these bacteria may result in reduced application of nitrogen and phosphorus mineral fertlizers. Also, this is a way to improve the economy of corn production, increase the biological value of soil and obtain ecologically valuable product.
