For several centuries, old pedunculate oaks in the strict nature reserve "Stara Vraticna", Serbia (Yugoslavia), represent the last remnants of the aincient pedunculate oak forests in the Sava river region. Based on the analysis of the structure, i.e. the characteristics of the previous and current process of pedunculate oak regeneration, this paper deals with the present coenological relations under the present protection regime. Regressive succession has been recorded as the consequence of development processes in the Reserve. Therefore we propose that the protection treatment should be directed to the enhancement of the spontaneous process of pedunculate oak regeneration.
