List of international and national important bird areas in Serbia [Yugoslavia] for bird fauna diversity protection

Strategy for protection of birds in Europe is being in developed in a number directions, and one of the main directions is identification and protection of their most important areas, for the purpose of facilitating control and development of programs of protection and sustainable utilization. International IBA project, which is being realized at the level of Europe (1998) "Important Bird Areas in Europe" (Bird Life International), with partitipation of Serbia (F.R. Yugoslavia), is aiming at evaluation of areas according to their international significance for birds, their registering in the international registries and implementation of adequate protective measures. Serbia has nominated 36 areas that have met numerous and strict IBA criteria - Vojvodina 16, Kosmet 2, central Serbia 18 (Puzovic and Grubac, 1997). Total surface of IBA areas is 775,560 ha or 8.8% of the Republic of Serbia (F.R. Yugoslavia).
