Vast populations of Lycopodium clavatum have been discovered on ski slopes in Ovifat and Fraiture. The species develops and fruits in a low heathland vegetation belonging to the Calluno-Vaccinietum vitis-idaeae Buecker 1942. Despite its particular situation (e.g. ski resort, high slope gradient), species richness and composition are rather similar to these recorded for most High Ardennes heathland. Hence, no deterioration of the vegetation composition due to skiing is observed in Ovifat and in Fraiture. While underlining the need for additional field measurements, this study suggests that the site management (i.e. regular mowing), which is necessary for the maintenance of the skiing area, has likely a positive influence on the establishment, preservation and development of Lycopodium clavatum populations along ski-resorts.
