Sugar beet weed control : yield in relation with herbicide selectivity and action

The use of the chemical herbicides applied to the sugar beet cultivation has been introduced in the 1960s. From that moment onwards the interest of science mainly focused on the study of the effectiveness of the herbicides. In spite of the genetic improvement and of the better agricultural techniques, the beet productivity in Italy did not improve. We tried therefore to verify the influence of pre- and postemergence herbicides on the productive growth of the roots. From 1996 to 1999 we carried out some experiments on beet, most of all on clay soils. We used different dosages and herbicide combinations and compared them with a reference plots of weeded and infested crops. This experience showed that a lower cultural selectivity corresponds to a lower root production. The herbicide, which mostly disturbed the crop, was lenacil. High lenacil dosages under pre- and post- emergence conditions and under heavy rain conditions could reduce the production. The crop losses can be reduced using leaf fertilization.
