This communication presents an analysis of the data collected from plots in the context of ITB variety tests carried out between 1988 and 1999 for the following parameters: plant stands, emergence speeds and yield factors. Between two varieties, the effect of the difference in the population harvested per hectare varies depending on whether the plant stand is high, medium or low. Consequently, the emergence conditions can have a more or less marked influence on the yields from different implantation sites. Furthermore, for similar plant stands, and other than the genetic incidence, the emergence speed has a significant action on yields. For the varieties for which emergence is rapid, this reaction is due to a combination of at least two factors: balanced competition between plants; less aggressive weeding thanks to the use of reduced doses.
