[The increase of C4 grasses (Poacea, Panicae) in the explosive spreas of weed communities of maize fields between Brugges and Gent (Flanders, Belgium)]
2001
Hoste, I. (Nationale plantentuin van Belgie, Meise (Belgium)) | Verloove, F.
In Flanders the explosive spread of maize fields in the last quarter of the 20th century was accompanied by the spread of a number of grasses such as Echinochloa crus-galli and Setaria verticillata. In 1999 and 2000 an area of 16 x 20 km was thoroughly examined in order to ascertain the present distribution of C4 grasses in a region where maize fields are very abundant. Setaria verticilliformis and Panicum dichotomiflorum, both first discovered in this area in 1990, are today widespread. The distribution of P. dichotomiflorum suggests a (very) small number of introductions, followed by an ongoing rapid expansion. The current expansion of Setaria macrocarpa appears to be even more explosive.
