Restoration of fish migratory possibilities in the Elbe catchment area, Czech Republic
2002
Slavik, O. (Vyzkumny Ustav Vodohospodarsky TGM, Prague (Czech Republic))
During the years 2000-2002 the efficiency of 13 fish ladders was tested in the Elbe river between the Czech town Nymburk and German boundaries. All the observed fish ladders belonged to an old chamber type. The most frequently found specimens in the ladders were animals from 120 to 220 mm of body length, i.e. in the majority of cases fishes that were not in their reproductive age. Bentic species and species that avoid unnatural environment during their migrations were only rarely or never observed. Our results prove that fish migration in the Elbe river is very limited as the old type of ladders are unsuitable for the passage of many species.
