[Salmonellae, Campylobacters and L. monocytogenes in foodstuffs from the market]

The aim of this study was to monitor the occurrence of Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., and Listeria monocytogenes in different kinds of foodstuffs in the Czech Republic during the years 1999-2000 and to compare the results with those of official control inspections. The most important source of Salmonella spp. (768 food samples analyzed) were the eggs (almost 30 % of consumer packs were contaminated) and poultry (14.6 %). Some bakery and confectionary products were also contaminated. Campylobacter jejuni (336 samples of meat and meat products analyzed) was found in poultry (5.2 %), pork and pork liver (3 %). Listeria monocytogenes (1,104 samples of different kinds of meat, meat and milk products, raisins, fresh and frozen vegetables analyzed) was present especially in the meat and meat products: from 7.3 % (poultry meat) to 16.7 % (beef). But some other products including frozen vegetables and icecreams were also contaminated. As shown by our study, food products in the Czech market may be contaminated more often and by a larger spectrum of pathogens than it is reported by official control organs.
