The efforts to rationalize forestry management system were common in Lithuania and in Europe during the last decade. The most attention was given to the possibilities to decrease the production and management costs. As the result of the land reform, the total forest ares managed by state forest enterprises will be cut by half. The average forest enterprise area has shrunk from 23.8 to 22.2 thousand ha during 1997-2000. However, the management costs still made up 27.4 in all the expenditures of forest enterprises. According to the estimated variety of activities in forest enterprises, the minimal number of administration staff (6-7 persons) and that of specialists representing all the fields of activities (5-6 persons) has been concluded. To keep the present management staff in the forest enterprise, the annual allowable cut should reach 80 thousand cubic m and the annual income should make up at least 6 million LTL.
