Design or drafting? ArchiCAD versus AutoCAD
2002
Dobelis, M. (Riga Technical Univ. (Latvia). Div. of Descriptive Geometry and Engineering Computer Graphics)
The paper deals with a brief overview about CAD (Computer Aided Design) development in building industry. Contemporary architecture and civil engineering demonstrate the increasing power of integrated 3D design, implemented in different software applications. Current siuation in architectural CAD design is analysed based on two most widely used applications in Latvia. The first one is AutoCAD, the name of which has become a synonym for Computer Aided Drafting and Design. Predominantly AutoCAD's use in a large extent is focused on the drafting rather than design. The second software is ArchiCAD, which gains the power with every new version. In several cases, ArchiCAD provides the features, which at present are not available in any other architectural CAD package.
