Upgrading of mobile flash dryer
2001
Anon.
The existing MFD [mobile flash dryer] was upgraded into a complete dryer. Modifications include provision of tempering bin, a redesigned unloader for discharge without clogging, provision of duct collecting system (suction blower) and replacement of blower and elevator engines with electric motors to reduce noise level during drying. Upgrading cost is approximately P35,000 to P48,000 depending on the heating system to be used. From 0.5 ton loading capacity, the capacity of the modified MFD was increased to 2 tons per batch. Performance test showed that drying time took an average of 9 hours to dry 2 tons palay from 27 percent initial moisture content [mc] to 14 percent final m.c. using 80 deg C drying temperature. On the other hand, it required 12 to 14 hours to dry 2 tons corn from 34 to 14 percent m.c. using 90 to 100 deg C drying temperature. The modifications made increased the moisture reduction rate of the existing flash dryer by 25 percent for palay and 18 percent for corn. Specific heat consumption decreased by 33 percent for palay and 15 percent for corn
