Use of medicated urea-molasses-mineral blocks for the control of nematode parasites of goats (Capra hircus)

The use of medicated urea-molasses-mineral blocks for the control of nematode parasites of goats was evaluated at the CLSU [Central Luzon State Univ., Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines] small Ruminant Center. Twenty upgraded goats, aged 1-2 years old and with an individual fecal egg count of 500 were purposively selected for the study. The animals were equally divided into two groups with one group given free access to medicated urea-molasses-mineral block (MUMMB), while the other was given urea-molasses-mineral block (UMMB). Fecal egg counts (FEC),packed cell volume (PCV) and body weights were taken prior to the start of the study and were repeated every week for eight weeks. Results in the fecal egg counts between the MUMMB and UMMB groups were analyzed using repeated measure analysis of variance. The initial FEC of both groups were both 1530 eggs (epg)/gram but at the end of the study, the FEC in MUMMB group (280 epg) was relatively lower than in UMMB (1040 epg) and their difference was highly significant (P0.001). The reduction in the FEC was 82% for the MUMMB while only 32% for the UMMB. This suggests that feeding MUMMB could reduce the parasitic burden in the animals more effectively than the UMMB. Significant differences (P0.0025) in the packed cell volume between MUMMB (29.8 plus minus 2.6) and UMMB (24.8 plus minus 4.4) and gain in weight for MUMMB (2.5 kg) and UMMB (0.75 kg) were also noted (P0.0001). Feeding MUMMB as supplement for short term duration in goats can reduce their nematode burden and improve their PCV and body weight gains
