Comparative acute toxicities of coconut fatty alcohol sulfate and linear alkylbenzene sulfonate to the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) by static renewal test

Comparative acute toxicity tests of coconut fatty alcohol sulfate (CFAS) and linear alkybenzene sulfonate (LAS) on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) were conducted using a laboratory assay, the static renewal method for 96 h, with renewal done every 24 h. Based on the results of the water quality analyses, the dilution water used was suitable for toxicity tests. When changes in the concentrations of both test surfactants were monitored, it was found that CFAS concentration dropped to almost zero adter 24 h; renewal raised the concentration only to about 10% of the original solution. For LAS, the concentration dropped to about 40% of the original solution after 24 h and renewal raised it again to more than 50% of the initial concentration. These results showed that CFAS biodegrades more easily than LAS. One hundred percent mortality was observed for 4 and 6 mg/L CFAS, whereas for LAS, 100% mortality was exhibited by 7 mg/L concentration. After 8 h, toxic effects were no longer evident for CFAS but LAS still showed effects up to 24 h. Medium lethal concentrations (LC50) of CFAS and LAS over 96-h static renewal exposure were 2.68 mg/L and 5.51 mg/L, respectively
