Distribution of Schistosome cercarial dermatitis in the United States

Swimmers itch is caused by snail-borne parasites that affect swimmers in fresh and salt water. Data obtained in this study (1999-2002) were collected using a web-based incident report form. Of more than 1200 reports, the largest number was from the State of Michigan. Next in rank were Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington, all located in the northern tier of states in the USA. There was a significant number of cases reported from people who swam in the Great Lakes and on the Eastern Coast. It appears that a majority of the cases of swimmer's itch occurred in regions of North America where there is overlap of the distribution ranges of Stagnicola emarginata and Mergus merganser, the common merganser. Reported cases of swimmer's itch gradually increased from May to July and then sharply fell in early Aug. This is probably due to the usual mortality in July of the older generation
