`MMSU Gold', a new `Carabao' mango (Mangifera indica L.) strain

The `Carabao' mango strain known as `Manila Super Mango'is the Philippines' premier mango export cultivar. The fruit is aromatic, tender, melting, tasty, pleasantly subacid, rich and deliciously succulent. In their search for outstanding mother trees for mass propagation of quality grafted seedlings, researchers at the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Payao, Batac, Ilocos Norte in Northern Philippines collected fruits from local mango trees. The fruits were evaluated using the Varietal Selection Standard set by the Fruit Crops Technical Working Group of the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC - FCTWG). Mango trees that passed the varietal selection standard for three seasons were considered outstanding. One of the mango trees found in the forest reserve of MMSU was selected. This mango tree was named `MMSU Gold' had been approved by the NSIC as a mother tree for commercialization. The tree is more than 50 years, spreading, vigorous and is a regular bearer. `Carabao' fruits are elliptical in shape, with full checks, and with yellow skin when ripe. The individual fruit weighs 288 g on the average; its flesh is also yellow, smooth and firm, subacid (18 deg Brix) in scanty or no fiber and has 74.13% edible portion. It is now being used as a source of scion for mass production of quality planting materials of grafted `Carabao' mango
