Although the relevance of participatory approaches is now generally accepted, their implementation in agricultural research and development is still unsatisfactory. This paper addresses two aspects that play a role in changing from conventional Transfer of Te (ToT) to participatory working modes: the changes in the role of the researcher and the institutional environment of the researcher. Examples are used from the field of Genetic Resource Management in which participatory approaches are needed to arrive at sustainable use and conservation of crop diversity
